Mitchell Shire’s Citizen of the Year for 2025 has been awarded to Wayne Cornish, a long-time driver at the Bundoora depot and a highly regarded member of the Wallan community.


Mitchell Shire’s Citizen of the Year for 2025 has been awarded to Wayne Cornish, a long-time driver at the Bundoora depot and a highly regarded member of the Wallan community. Recognised for his outstanding contributions, Wayne’s dedication to local causes spans over two decades.


Wayne’s community service includes 20 years of involvement with the Wallan scout group, where he has played a key role in mentoring young members. For 15 years, he has also managed the Wallan market, an important event for the local economy, while spending the past decade fundraising for Variety, supporting children in need.


Beyond his official roles, Wayne has been a driving force behind initiatives such as the Wallan twilight markets and has shown a strong commitment to sustainability by collecting cans for recycling, including those at the Bundoora depot.


His recognition as Citizen of the Year highlights Wayne’s profound and lasting impact on the Mitchell Shire.
