The redevelopment will enable Dysons to house and operate up to 188 electric buses from the upgraded site.
Dysons has officially broken ground at its Bundoora depot, launching a major infrastructure project to electrify the site and deliver one of Victoria’s largest zero-emissions bus facilities.
The redevelopment will enable Dysons to house and operate up to 188 electric buses from the upgraded site, supported by a state-of-the-art smart charging system and a comprehensive depot redesign. The project forms a critical part of the Victorian Government’s Metropolitan Zero Emissions Bus Franchise (MZF), aimed at accelerating the state’s transition to clean public transport.
Dysons CEO Andrew Jakab said the electrification of Bundoora marks a significant milestone for the company.
“For the last 73 years, Dysons has built a reputation as a leading diesel bus operator. But the future of public transport is electric, and this project ensures we are well positioned to lead in that space too,” Mr Jakab said.
“We’re proud to be investing in infrastructure that supports lower emissions, smarter energy use and a better experience for our passengers and communities.”
The Bundoora depot will be fitted with chargers capable of supporting every two electric buses, backed by major grid upgrades and energy infrastructure delivered in partnership with international EV specialists Zenobē. Long-time construction partner Dzine Construction will lead the on-ground works.
The ground-breaking event brought together project partners, government representatives and local council leaders. Attendees included Mayor Kristine Olaris OAM from Darebin City Council, Councillor Lawrie Cox GAICD JP from the City of Whittlesea, and representatives from the Department of Transport and Planning.
The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed in stages through to late 2026, ensuring Dysons can continue to operate from the site throughout construction.
The project represents a significant investment in the future of public transport across Melbourne’s north and northeast, with Bundoora set to become a flagship depot for zero-emissions fleet operations.
